How do you take your "domain name" from one site builder company to another?

I want to change companies because I found a company that will give me more for my money. But, I registered my domain name with the first company. Is there a way that I can transfer it. I know that if I apply for the same domain name, it will come up as already being used by someone. And that someone is me. So can somebody explain this to me? How can I use my same domain name with the other company who will also host it for me?

You are wanting to do what is called a DNS transfer. The new company can sometimes initiate the DNS transfer, but at some point the administrative contact for the domain (I%26#039;m guessing you) will have to tell Company #1, I want to transfer my DNS to Company #2.

A lot of domain companies will make it more obvious on how to transfer a domain to them, and most companies will make it more difficult to transfer a domain away from them (they don%26#039;t want to lose business).

Be aware that your %26#039;web site%26#039; is a group of files that currently reside with company #1. When you initiate a DNS transfer, you are telling the internet to look at a different set of computers for the same batch of files. It is your responsiblity to make sure you have a copy of your website that you will give to company #2, so that when the DNS is transferred, the outside world will still see your website.

If you have a generated website, such as through Geo-Cities, I%26#039;m not sure how successful you will be in getting your website copied to your computer.

So:

1) Copy your website from it%26#039;s online area to your computer

2) Tell Company #1 you wish to initiate a DNS Transfer to Company #2 (Company #2 will tell you what IP Addresses and DNS addresses to give them)

3) This process should take no longer than 72 hours from initiation by Company #1.

Look at the company sites that you are transferring from/to for a form or FAQ on this. Some sites make it hard to transfer out, but they have to allow this. If you can%26#039;t find it on their site, call or email their support number. You can also refer to the ICANN transfer requirements that registrars have agreed to.

Other Replys:The site you are going to should be able to do it. Godaddy.com, for example, will move your domain if you hire them as a web-hoster

Other Replys:If I understand your question correctly, you want to move your web site to a new hosting company, but are concerned about your domain, right?

As long as you continue to pay your current registrar the required annual fee to maintain your domain, you don%26#039;t have to move it from where it is--unless you want to. Your new hosting company should be able to assist you with the information it will need in order to host your site where it is. Then, you can just cancel your hosting account with the original service.

I have a website registered with one company (GoDaddy.com) but hosted elsewhere (Powweb.com). It%26#039;s a pretty simple matter. But if you%26#039;d rather have all your eggs in one basket, (and assuming your hosting company can handle domain registrations) you can just as easily transfer your domain registration to the new registrar. They will be able to walk you through all the steps necessary to accomplish the transfer, and may likely give you a promotional price for transferring your domain to them.

Other Replys:If you want to transfer to a different hosting service, you would contact the new hosting provider and ask them what nameserver to use for your domain name. Then instruct your registrar to use that nameserver for your name. If you want a new registrar, you need to unlock the name by contacting your current registrar. Then find a new registrar and ask them to initiate a transfer.
