Is it possible to 'buy' and 'own' a domain??

I visited www.domain.com to check on some domains. after i selected the domain name i wanted, it said this domain is available.

when i clicked on purchase, the price was 60$ for a year - 100$ for 2 years - 250$ for 5 years. also i have to pay for hosting and other things too. so this money is %26#039;only%26#039; for the domain.

now my question is, can%26#039;t i just *buy* this domain forever without having to pay money every year???

Is it possible to %26#039;buy%26#039; and %26#039;own%26#039; a domain??

In short no -- you cannot buy a name %26#039;forever%26#039;....

You can pay for 10 years of registration if you want..... but ICANN does not currently have a method of permantent ownership.

If you go multi-year registration -- check out godaddy as well.. it%26#039;s my preferred registrar... and there are deep discounts for long-term registrion. Even w/o discounts it%26#039;s only $8.99/year -- 60 bucks/year is 10 year old pricing.

No, domain names are not ownable forever, unless you keep renewing it. The fees charged are generally charged to cover admin costs involved in registration and maintaining the record with the domain registry in your respective country (they charge your registrar regularly for the domain).

Other Replys:No 10 years is the maximum. Buying them forever would be dumb, what if you die/ no longer use the dimain etc other people should have the chance to take it. And those prices sound high I bought mine for 10$ a year
