Website Help Anyone? Domain Name or Server?

I%26#039;m planning on creating a website similar to www.ratemyteacher.com but no for teachers. Anyway I don%26#039;t really know much on making website but this is just a little project. Main question is that when looking for web site host I encounter much more than domain names like servers and such. For a webiste that is userbased and has ratings and such would I need a server?

In order to have your site accessible by other users you would need web hosting (or a server) and preferably a domain name, or at least hosting which comes with a sub-domain name.

For hosting I use dreamhost.com and for domain names I use godaddy.com

I, myself, use Http://awardspace.com.

My website is:

Myspacelayy.awardspace.com

It%26#039;s actually not half bad.

Other Replys:Dear friend, if you want to start a website I suggest you to purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

And any bad web hosting service would trouble you for a long period. At first, try to choose a professional service to get rid of the subsequent problems.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I閳ユ獡 sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting %26amp; I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

Other Replys:You can try web hosting provider like http://aplis.net/ first month free.

You can also hire a web designer from freelance website like http://getafreelnacer.com/

Other Replys:I took a quick look at the website. Just a quick look anyway bcos I am too busy to explore. From the look of things, I%26#039;d hazard a guess that those people got a dedicated server or a virtual server.

A dedicated server or a virtual server gives you more power. One problem with shared server is that it is not as stable as dedicated server since many people are using it. A bad code from an inexperienced coder can bring down the whole server. Another thing is that the data is not as secure, since a really smart person can log in and manipulate your data or look at your script. Let me use a real life example hoping you will get the idea. In my country (Nigeria), there are hostels 4 students. Normally there are 4 or 5 students to a room. Assuming you are rich enough and have enough clout, you alone can get the whole room for your self. Of course, you have your privacy et all, but then you need to pay more. That is the kind of the idea here.

Do you need a server? Most likely. One, for the kind of project you have in mind, you need a lot of room for data and stability. Stability is difficult or impossible to guarantee in shared hosting. You have more disk space. But then you will need to pay more.

Since in dedicated server, you are essentially renting a server, you can install any program that catches your fancy. That is a big plus. However, note that you will need to buy support if you can administer the server on your own. From the way you sound, I think you will need to buy the support.
